Mike Mahon, PhD, MS Mike wears many hats with SfA. He is a trained solar photovoltaic instructor and has taught in the private sector and most recently with the Los Angeles Trade & Technical College. Mike holds a certificate of knowledge certificate of knowledge from NABCEP. Mike also works as a volunteer solar installer for GRID Alternatives in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mike designed the training curriculum for SfA 40-hour solar installation course being offered to local conservation corps throughout California. Mike is also SfA’s resident expert in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technology. He excels at taking hard-to-digest data sets (numbers) and creating charts that integrate with mapping technology to produce easily understandable graphics. His GIS maps help organizational executives and board members to quickly understand complicated issues enabling them to make informed, data-driven decisions.
His GIS work has been used by several organizations to demonstrate their statewide service coverage to public policy makers. Mike also has a deep understanding of emerging renewable energy technologies. Putting his extensive engineering background to work, he is SfA’s in-house advisor on renewable energy technology issues.
Mike received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 1992, and his M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Florida in 1998. Mike is an avid runner, competing in cross country, road and track races and ultra-marathons. He also enjoys cycling, scuba diving and the occasional triathlon.
